Accidental death of Stonehaven child

Stonehaven, 1st June, 1819. - A most distressing accident happened here yesterday afternoon.  Just as the Mail Coach was descending from the Bridge of Cowie, and making the quick turn into the Bridge-street, a child of between 3 and 4 years of age, belonging to Mr David Henderson, merchant here, unfortunately chanced to be then nearly in the way of the Coach, and but a very little distance ahead of her, when running to get out of the road, it fell just before the horses, and altho' every possible exertion was made by the driver to stop the horses, and by some people near at the time to save the child, one of the wheels passed over the poor infant's head, and part of the breast, and crushed it to death.

At the instance of the Procurator Fiscal, a precognition was taken to-day, in regard to the way and manner in which the accident happened - and all who were eye witnesses of it declare, that no blame whatever rests with the guard or driver; that altho' the child had belonged to either of them, they could not possibly have saved its life.  The whole blame lies in the abominable bridge over the Cowie water - its excessive narrowness and steepness, besides the acute turn which it causes in coming into the town of Stonehaven.

It is much to be wished that a new bridge were put up, of the proper breadth, and higher up the water, for no person can be safe to pass the present one on foot, at any time, but particularly at night.

Published in the Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday 2nd June 1819.

The child may have been Anne Henderson, daughter of David Henderson and Sarah Hutcheon, whose baptism was recorded in the Fetteresso parochial register on 28th November 1815.

Theft committed by James Brown

About a fortnight ago, a man from Stonehaven or its vicinity, whose name is James Brown, and who contrives to pass for a fool, went in the silence of the night into two houses in the parish of Banchory Devenick, the doors of which he found open, stole to the bedsides of several persons asleep, searched their clothes, and abstracted from their Pockets about Four Pounds Sterling, with several snuff-boxes, pen-knives, &c.  He was next day traced to a public-house at no great distance, accused of the theft, avowed it, and gave up the trinkets with what part of the money he had not dissipated.  Against such an artful depredator the public should be put on their guard:  He is a stout middle-aged man, and when he committed the above theft, wore a short coat and kelt, with a showy highland bonnet - he sometimes appears in a soldier's coat, with side arms.

Justices Court cases

The Justices, in a Court held at Rathen, on Monday se'nnight, fined Robert Maitland, Feuar in Newpitsligo, in £1 14s. sterling, in name of fine and expences, on a complaint brought against him, by Lewis Chalmers, Factor for Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, for shooting on that Estate without a licence.

William Hughes, John Hughes, Mary Hughes, Barbara Henderson, and Helen Henderson, accused of coining, were brought from Perth on Monday night, and lodged in the tolbooth, to take their trial before the High Court of Justiciary.

By the vigilance of the parish officer of Carlisle, another gang of vagrants, travelling with forged passes, were detected last week.  They came from Stonehaven and Aberdeen, accompanied by several children, and it would appear, were on their way to Folkestone, in Kent.  In their route they raised nearly £10 - they came through Hawick, Langholm, and Longtown.  Suspecting that their nefarious plan was detected, they decamped without calling a second time for money; the passports were detained.  Two of the women travelled under the names of Tully and Dallison.
