Death of David Barron

In a late paper, we copied a paragraph respecting the deceased David Barron, late officer of Excise in Aberlour, whose body was found in the Spey, about two miles above Fochabers. - It was therein stated, that strong suspicions existed "of his death not happening altogether accidentally".  For the satisfaction of the public, we have to mention, that very soon after Mr Barron's body was discovered, the Sheriff-substitute of the county of Elgin, accompanied by the Collector of Excise for the district, and the Procurator Fiscal, proceeded to the immediate neighbourhood of the place where the deceased lost his life, and made a most minute investigation into the causes of his death, from which it satisfactorily appeared that his death was entirely occasioned by accident.

Suspicious death of David Barron

David Barron, officer of excise in Aberlour division, left his house at that place on the 16th ult. and was seen by some people the same evening on his way to Grantown to attend an excise collection.  He never reached that place, however, nor was heard of till nine days after, when his body was discovered in the Spey, about two miles above Fochabers, by some people employed in floating wood down the river.  The deceased, when found, wanted his coat, and had a deep wound in his head, which has given rise to strong suspicion of his death not happening accidentally.  He was in the prime of life, and has left a widow and five young children to lament his untimely fate.

James Craig, Garmouth

NOTICE TO DEBTORS AND CREDITORS.

THE Trustees on the Estate of JAMES CRAIG, Merchant, Garmouth, hereby intimate that a Scheme of Division is about to be made out; and those failing to lodge their claims, properly vouched, before the 1st March next, with Alexander Beaton, Hat Manufacturer, Aberdeen, will be entitled to no share of the first dividend.  -  It is also requested that those who are indebted to the said James Craig will order immediate payment to Mr Alexander Russel, Merchant, Fochabers, to prevent prosecution, which will be raised without loss of time, against all the Debtors who fail to comply with this intimation.

John Forbes, escaped prisoner

ESCAPE FROM THE JAIL OF ELGIN.

WHEREAS, JOHN FORBES, Ship Carpenter, last at Fochabers, incarcerated at the instance of the Procurator of the Sheriff Court of Elginshire, effected his Escape from the Jail of this place, on Friday evening the 24th current.

The Magistrates of Elgin hereby offer

A REWARD OF FIVE GUINEAS,

to any person who shall apprehend and secure the said John Forbes; besides all expences incurred on his apprehension, to be paid by the Town Treasurer.

Description. - The said John Forbes is about 5 feet 9 inches high; dark complexioned, black hair, black eyes, with arched eye-brows, about 22 years of age, an active figure; and had on, at the time of his escape, a long blue coat, and grey trowsers.

Breach of agreement by salmon fisher

Last week, a man of the name of Alexr. Milne was brought before the Justices of the Peace at Fochabers, on a complaint at the instance of the Tacksman of the Spey Fishings, for breach of agreement, having on various frivolous pretences, refused to enter into his service, as a Salmon Fisher, though regularly engaged for this season; and the complaint having been clearly established, the Justices ordained him to enter to and implement his service; and failing thereof, granted warrant for imprisoning him, till he found caution to that effect.  They also found him liable in damages and expences to the complainers.  It is hope this will prove a salutary example to others, as a disregard of engagements of this sort has become too common among persons hired as Salmon Fishers, to the great inconveniency and loss of their employers.

Mains of Orton

FARM IN THE COUNTY OF MORAY

To let from Whitsunday 1814, on a lease of 19 or 21 years,

THE MAINS of ORTON, as presently possessed by Mr Geddes, containing about 180 acres arable, and above 130 pasture, great part of which is improveable.

This farm is in a high state of cultivation, having been all thoroughly limed, and under a regular rotation of cropping.  There is a Dwelling House and Offices at present on the farm; but as an incoming tenant might incline other accommodation, a suitable allowance will be given.  A Meal Mill and Threshing Mill driven by weater, are immediately adjoining the above.  Every accommodation at entry will be given; and for farther particulars, application may be made to the Proprietor, at Orton House, by Fochabers; or to Mr Geddes, with either of whom offers may be lodged.

John Hosack, Mr Geddes's miller, will shew the lands, and point out the boundaries.

ALEXANDER GREEN, CLOCHAN, begs respectfully to return his thanks to his numerous friends and the public, and to inform them that at present he has on sale about 80,000 GREY SLATES, of very superior size and quality, principally dug from the Quarry of Oaxhill.

He continues to keep a constant supply at BUCKIE, PORT GORDON, or SPEYMOUTH, where Vessels calling will be supplied.  He will also execute orders from Elgin, Fochabers, &c. &c. on the shortest notice.

The quality of the Slate of LETTERFOURIE, of which A.G. is Tacksman, is well known to be superior; and he trusts his friends on a trial, will not be disappointed.

Orders addressed to A. Green, Clochan, by Fochabers, will meet with attention.

Mains of Milltown of Noth

TO BE LET

For 11 years from Whitsunday first, 1811,

THE MAINS of MILLTOWN of NOTH, in the Parish of Rhynie, as the same was occupied by the late Mr. ROBERT GORDON.

It consists of about one hundred and fifty acres of arable and pasture, exclusive of moor.  The soil is dry and good ; and from its southern exposure, the crops in general, are among the earliest in that part of the country.  Should an addition of land be considered an advantage to the tenant, it may be annexed afterwards, as those adjoining are not in lease.

Offers may be given in to James Gordon, Esq. at Cocklarachy, by Huntly, or to the Rev. John Anderson at Fochabers, up to the 20th day of April, when the candidate preferred will be settled with.
