Farm leases in Deskford and Grange

BANFFSHIRE.

FARMS in the Parishes of Deskford and Grange, to be Let for 19 years, from Whitsunday first, 1818.

1st,  The FARM of GOUKSTONE and WESTER WINDYHILLS, as presently possessed by James Bremner.

2d,  The FARM of LURGBRAE, and OVER WINDYHILLS, &c. as possessed by John Merson. - AND

3d,  The FARM of LITTLE AIRDYCOW, as possessed by James and William Murray.

Offers for the above mentioned Farms may be addressed to Colonel Grant of Grant, M.P.  Cullen House, till Saturday the 13th of April, on which day the whole are to be Set at 12 o'clock noon.

James Wilson, Deskford, deceased

DESKFORD.  - By the death of Mr James Wilson, which has taken place at Kirkton, Deskford has lost one of its best farm hands.  Always of a steady, quiet, kindly disposition, James, who had reached the age of 55 years, was ever on the spot when work was to be done.  For 25 years he had been at the farm of Kirkton, first as man to the late Mr George Duncan, then as the faithful servant of Mr Alexander Duncan, and during that time many a fine horse did he put in harness for the first time for his master.  On Mr Duncan's death in 1907 James was put in charge of the farm for the present tenant, Mr Ross, and under his careful management many fine stirks have been sent to the butcher.  He was without doubt one of the most careful men in the parish in farm work, and so recently as the 12th inst. did he volunteer to attend the roup at Claymires to give his services there.  He was not, however, well, and was not able to do anything for the remaining few days he lived, but he died practically in harness.  His funeral, to Deskford churchyard on Thursday, was largely attended.  A widow, three sons, and one daughter are left to mourn his loss.  Two of the sons are in Canada, and the other is in Glasgow with his sister, who is married there.  To these much sympathy is extended throughout the parish.

Deskford Kirk Session Minutes, 12th July 1812

The Session met & constituted &c. Compeared Elspet Lawrence & adhered to her former accusation of Alexr. Reid as the Father of her Child.  Compeared also Alexr. Reid & confessed guilt with the said Elspet Lawrence.  This being a case of Adultery, the Session referred it the to Presb[yter]y at their first meeting, & the Officer was appointed to summon them to said meeting.

Deskford Kirk Session Minutes, 5th July 1812

Session met & constituted &c. Compeared Elspet Lawrence an unmarried woman & acknowledged she is with Child & gives Alexander Reid a married man in Berryhillock as the Father, she was summoned apud acta to attend the Session next sabbath & the Officer was appointed to summon the said Alexr. Reid to attend also.

William Ogilvie served heir to Alexander Ogilvie

On Wednesday the 19th inst. WILLIAM OGILVIE, Esq, late a Clerk in the War Office, who claims the title of Earl of Findlater, was served heir male to ALEXANDER OGILVIE of Boyne, who died in 1604, and to Sir PATRICK OGILVIE of Boyne, who died in 1713, by a unanimous verdict of a very respectable Jury, before the Sheriff of Banffshire.  One witness was examined, who is in the 103d year of his age.  It is understood, that WALTER OGILVIE of Boyne, who died about the year 1560, the father of the above ALEXANDER, was the second son of the family of Findlater and Deskford.

John Stewart, Deskford

NOTICE TO DEBTORS AND CREDITORS

ALL those who are indebted to JOHN STEWART, late Merchant, Hogie, parish of Deskford, will please pay their accounts to William Wilson, or John Watt, both merchants in Banff (on or before the 25th of this month) who have power to grant discharges.  If this intimation is not immediately complied with, their accounts will be put into the hands of a Writer, for recovery of payments.

Sale of stock in Deskford

SALE OF MERCHANT GOODS

AND

NOTICE TO DEBTORS AND CREDITORS

On Monday the 19th day of August ensuing, there will be sold by public roup, at HOGGIE, in the parish of Deskford,

THE whole Stock of MERCHANT GOODS, and other Effects, which belonged to JOHN STEWART, now to Trustees for behoof of his Creditors, consisting of Cloths, Corduroys, Printed Cottons, Cambrics, Groceries, &c.  The roup to begin at 10 o'clock forenoon.

- AND - 

The Creditors of the said John Stewart will please lodge their grounds of debt, with oaths of verity thereon, in the hands of his Trustees, William Wilson, and John Watt, Merchants, in Banff, as soon as possible; and all those indebted to John Stewart, will make payment to either of the trustees, within a month from this date, to avoid prosecution.

Deskford Kirk Session Register, 1811

Janry. 7th 1811.  The Session met & constituted &c Compeared Alexr. Ingles Junr & Margt. Whyte, confessed the sin of antenuptial fornication, were suitably exhorted & having paid the usual penalty were absolved from Church Discipline.  Closed with prayer.
