Prizes for ploughmen in Turriff district

The Stewards of the Aberdeenshire Agricultural Association, for the District of Turriff, having resolved, that the Premium given by the Association, for the encouragement of Ploughing, should be appropriated to the ploughmen on the three best ploughed farms in the district, occupied by Members of the Association: to be distributed according to the merits of their servants, by the occupiers of the successful farms:  An inspection accordingly took place, upon the 12th and 13th inst. by two respectable and skilful judges, from the County of Banff, viz.:  Messrs Longmore at Rettie, and Simpson at Threipland, who were very much pleasd with the ploughing on a great proportion of the farms, and adjudged the premiums as follows:

1st Premium, 4l. to James Graham, John Strachan, James Wilson, and James Carnegie, ploughmen to Mr Keith, on the farm of Netherthird, parish of Auchterless.

2d Premium, 3l. 10s. to John Moir, Alexander Johnston, William Falconer, and John Topp, ploughmen to Mr Webster, in the farm of Mains of Laithers, parish of Turriff.

3d Premium, 3l. to John Keith, James Gammie, George Legat, and John Crawford, ploughmen to Mr Hay, on the farm of Meikle Rothie, parish of Fyvie.

The Stewards take this opportunity of returning their particular thanks to Messrs Longmore and Simpson, for the very great trouble taken by them in the business, being convinced that their decision, and the mode of Competition, will be attended with the very best effects in the district.

James Wilson, Deskford, deceased

DESKFORD.  - By the death of Mr James Wilson, which has taken place at Kirkton, Deskford has lost one of its best farm hands.  Always of a steady, quiet, kindly disposition, James, who had reached the age of 55 years, was ever on the spot when work was to be done.  For 25 years he had been at the farm of Kirkton, first as man to the late Mr George Duncan, then as the faithful servant of Mr Alexander Duncan, and during that time many a fine horse did he put in harness for the first time for his master.  On Mr Duncan's death in 1907 James was put in charge of the farm for the present tenant, Mr Ross, and under his careful management many fine stirks have been sent to the butcher.  He was without doubt one of the most careful men in the parish in farm work, and so recently as the 12th inst. did he volunteer to attend the roup at Claymires to give his services there.  He was not, however, well, and was not able to do anything for the remaining few days he lived, but he died practically in harness.  His funeral, to Deskford churchyard on Thursday, was largely attended.  A widow, three sons, and one daughter are left to mourn his loss.  Two of the sons are in Canada, and the other is in Glasgow with his sister, who is married there.  To these much sympathy is extended throughout the parish.

Ordiquhill Kirk Session Minutes, 27th June 1813

Session met &c. - Compeared Isobel Robertson and being interrogated whether she adhered to her former Confession in giving John Duncan as the father of her Child Answered that she did.  And added that the Child was begotten the first day of the New Year, this present Year 1813.  At same time compeared John Duncan, who being asked whether he was the Father of Is. Robertson's Child , Answered that he was not the Father of her Child but acknowledged guilt with her in her own house, Eleven Months before this date.  They both acknowledged being in the House of James Wilson who keeps an Ale house on the Roadside upon the first day of the New Year, and that said John Duncan conveyed Is. Robertson about half a mile above Ordings where she said the Child was begot.  Upon farther Consideration and reflection John Duncan acknowledged that he was the Father of the Child and craved of the Session that he might this day be Sessionally absolved.  The Session taking this under Consideration agreed to his request upon paying a penalty of twenty five Sh.  He said this was all he could afford, as he had an aged Mother to support.  The Session from their own conviction knew this to be true.  He paid the above Sum immediately to the Treasurer and was suitably exhorted, rebuked and absolved. - The said Is. Robertson was summoned Apud Acta to attend next Meeting of Presb[yter]y, as this was the fourth time She had been before the Session, for the Sin of fornication.
