David Walker, Bervie: unexpected death

On the morning of the 1st instant, David Walker, 32 years of age, a poor labouring man of the town of Bervie, was found dead on the side of the street near the Lodging Well. His body was carefully inspected by a Surgeon in the presence of the Magistrates, but no marks of violence were o be seen; hence the cause of his death could not be ascertained. He had been sent to Mr Stephen's at Warburton (about 10 miles from Bervie) with a horse on Saturday afternoon, and left that about five or six o'clock, seemingly in good health. He was a sober, industrious man, and what makes his premature death the more lamentable, is, that he has left a Widow and five young children, herself with the sixth, in very poor circumstances. The smallest sums for the relief of this destitute family will be thankfully received by Baillies Walker and Gray, Mr Warbie, Dr Guthrie, and Captain Guthrie, Bervie.

TO PERSONS OF THE NAME OF PALMER

THE nearest relations of DAVID PALMER, who died lately intestate, in the Island of Jamaica, are desired to apply to ARCHIBALD YOUNG, Writer in Banff, who will communicate certain information respecting the deceased, which may prove to their advantage.

David Palmer is supposed to have been a native of Banffshire, by trade a Brickmaker; was about sixty years of age when he died, and had been in Jamaica upwards of thirty years. It is said that about the year 1800 he had a brother in the service of a Mr Ramsey, a gentleman in the county of Banff, or in some of the adjoining counties.

William Ogilvie served heir to Alexander Ogilvie

On Wednesday the 19th inst. WILLIAM OGILVIE, Esq, late a Clerk in the War Office, who claims the title of Earl of Findlater, was served heir male to ALEXANDER OGILVIE of Boyne, who died in 1604, and to Sir PATRICK OGILVIE of Boyne, who died in 1713, by a unanimous verdict of a very respectable Jury, before the Sheriff of Banffshire. One witness was examined, who is in the 103d year of his age. It is understood, that WALTER OGILVIE of Boyne, who died about the year 1560, the father of the above ALEXANDER, was the second son of the family of Findlater and Deskford.

At same time compeared said Jas. Moir and acknowledged that he was the father of Jean Cowie's Child. They petitioned that they might be Sessionally absolved from the Scandal. As they had given no trouble, the Session agreed to their request upon paying a penalty of twenty five Sh. Stg. for the behoof of the poor which was as much as they know they could spare, as they were both poor. This they immediately complied with and were accordingly Sessionally rebuked and absolved.

Accidental death of William Deans, cartwright

On Thursday afternoon, William Deans, cartwright in the new road to Bridge of Dee, was unfortunately killed by the following melancholy accident. While crossing the road from his own door, a little dog run out of a neighbouring house; and fastening on the leg of a horse at that time passing, the animal became restive; and the unfortunate man laying hold of his head to stop him, the horse reared and threw him down among his feet; where he kicked and plunged most furiously; and before he could be extricated from his situation, he was so lacerated and bruised, that he died in the greatest agony in little more than an hour. By this melancholy event, a widow and two children are left to deplore the death of an affectionate husband and father, and a worthy man.

Prizewinning Ploughmen

The ploughing match appointed by the Garioch Farmer Club, took place at Newton upon the 2d inst. A numerous committee of the club attended, who, in consequence of the unanimous opinion of four Judges, practical gentlemen farmers, found Alexander Watson, servant to Mr Keith, in Netherthird, entitled to the first Premium; Alexander Skene, also servant to Mr Keith, entitled to the second; and James Bisset, servant at Lessendrum, entitled to the third.

On the recommendation of the Judges, the Committee authorised their Secretary to pay a fourth premium to Alexander Simpson, in Threefield of Culsalmond, as his work was the fourth in point of merit, and as it is the wish of the Club, to encourage actual farmers and farmers' sons to come forward with their own ploughs. The work in general obtained the approbation of the judges, the committee, and a numerous concourse of spectators.

St Cyrus salmon fishings

SALMON FISHINGS TO LET.

To be let by public roup, within the house of Mr. Hunter, vintner, Montrose, upon Friday the 11th of October next, betwixt the hours of 3 and 4 afternoon,

A TACK, for Five Years from Candlemas next, of the SALMON FISHINGS of ROCKHALL, belonging to Mr Scott of Criggie, lying in the parish of St. Cyrus, and county of Kincardine.

These fishings begin near the mouth of the river North-esk, and extend upwards of a mile along the shore, which is good ground for net and coble. There are also several eligible situations for State nets, which would be most productive, and encouragement will be given in erecting them.

John Melvin accused of murder

On Monday last, the Circuit Court of Justiciary was opened here, by the Right Hon. Lord MEADOWBANK. The only trial before his Lordship was that of John Melvin, residing near the Printfield, acused of the murder of William Shepherd, on the 8th of August last. The pannel pled Not Guilty, and the case having been remitted to the verdict of an assize; after a trial which lasted the greatest part of the day, the jury returned a verdict of Not Proven, upon which the pannel, after a suitable admonition from the bench, was absoilzied and dismissed from the bar. It appeared in evidence, that the deceased had met his death in a drunken scuffle at the last Greenburn Market, having received several mortal cuts in the groin, of which he died in two days afterwards.

Sudden deaths of John Dean and James Forsyth

Sudden Deaths. - At Keith, on Thursday the 29th ult. John Dean, manufacturer: he had gone to bed in good health, about half-past 10 o'clock, and was dead against midnight: - and next morning, James Forsyth, labourer, who lived in the same street, only a few doors from the house of the former, on going out early to his yard, in his usual health, for the purpose of doing some work, dropped down and instantly expired!

To the Creditors and DEBTORS of HUGH DUNCAN, sometime Merchant in Huntly, now in Ardonald.

The said Hugh Duncan having granted a disposition to Trustees for behoof of his Creditors; it is requested that those having claims on him, will immediately lodge the same, with oaths of verity thereon, in the hands of John Duncan, in Drywells, Cabrach, one of his Trustees, or Alexr. Stewart, writer in Huntly; and those indebted to the Bankrupt, will pay the same to the said Alexander Stewart, without delay, or they will be immediately prosecuted.

The two following small FARMS, belonging to the Right Honourable ALEXANDER GEORGE LORD SALTOUN, will be let for such a period as can be agreed upon, not exceeding 19 years:

1st. The farm of MIDDLEBURGH, lately possessed by William Dunbar, containing about 17 acres 1 rood 23 falls of good infield.

2d. Part of the farm of CAIRN, presently possessed by John Anderson, containing about twelve acres of good infield.

These farms are inclosed, and delightfully situated - the 1st about 3/4ths of a mile and the 2d about 1 1/4th miles from the town of Fraserburgh; from the shores of which, an ample supply of Sea-ware for manure can be readily had.

Accidental death of James Mackie

On Wednesday night last, James Mackie, carrier betwixt Dundee and Aberdeen, was killed by the overturning of his cart, in the wood of Tealing, on the Forfar road, about six miles from Dundee. It would appear the accident was occasioned by the cart coming in contact with one of those cairns of metal so frequently to be found ornamenting the sides of the highways, - but compelling the unfortunate traveller to traverse the many hills and dales with which the middle of the roads (in Forfarshire at least), are so charmingly diversified. The deceased, who is supposed to have been walking alongside, was found below the cart, the neave of which had entered his back, and caused his immediate dissolution. The accident was discovered by the howling of his dog. The poor man has left a wife and large family to lament his loss.

Trial of Scythe in Moray

On the 2d August, the Morayshire Farmer Club had a SCYTHE mounted with a CRADLE for cutting and gathering Corn, tried in a Field of Barley in their presence. A Model of this implement was procured from Wales, (where, and in the Western Counties of England it is generally used) by Mr JAMES WILLIAMSON, Millwright at Pittendreich, near Elgin, under whose direction this Scythe was mounted. The experiment fully answered the expectations formed, and convinced every one present that this Scythe is much better calculated to cut corn and lay it over in a regular manner, than any of the others which have hitherto been introduced in this county. One great advantage is the simplicity of its construction, as a common Smith can in a short time mount the Cradle on any Scythe. The original is now deposited with the Secretary of the Morayshire Farmer Club, to act as a pattern for the Members, or any Gentleman who may apply for it.

ALEXANDER STRATH, Substitute for the Parish of Fyvie, enrolled the 28th May ult. then aged 26 years, five feet three inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, gray eyes, born in the parish of Fyvie, and county of Aberdeen, resident at the time of enrollment in the county of Aberdeen, and by trade a Calicoe Printer, deserted from the party of the Militia at Aberdeen, 26 days after enrollment.

The usual Reward will be paid to any person who may apprehend the above deserter, and lodge him in any of his Majesty's Jails, on application to the Receiving Officer at Aberdeen: and the Lieges are desired to take notice, that those found harbouring desesrters are by the Militia Laws, liable in L.100 Sterling for each offence.

A meeting of the deceased's Creditors is to be held within the house of Mr McConachie, vintner in Hardhaugh, on Monday the 8th July next, at 12 noon, when it is requested all concerned will attend, in order to concert the necessary measures for liquidating his debts, and recovering those outstanding on his estate.

JAMES HARPER, in Bogniebrae, parish of Forgue, executor appointed by the deceased LEWIS HARPER, sometime tenementer in Huntly, and JEAN WILSON, his spouse, hereby requests a Meeting of the Brothers and Sisters, Bairns of the said Lewis Harper, and the Sister's Bairns of the said Jean Wilson, within the Post-Office in Huntly, upon Saturday, the 20th of July next, at 12 o'clock noon, to hear the deceased's last Will and Testament, and to see a State of their Affairs at the time of the death of the longest liver of them two; also to give directions to the executor as to the further management.

All those indebted to the defuncts, and those having claims against them, are desired to attend at same time and place.

JAMES EWEN, WEAVER IN PETERHEAD

SUCH persons as had legal claims against the said JAMES EWEN, at the time of his granting a disposition omnium bonorum, (30th July, 1810), in favour of Alexander Gordon, late merchant in Peterhead, now at Inverugie, as trustee for himself and the said James Ewen's other Creditors, are requested to lodge the same with oaths of verity thereon, with Roderick Gray, writer in Peterhead, within one month from this date. Certifying those who fail to comply with this notice that they will not be entitled to any share of the proceeds of the bankrupt's subjects.
